Drowning deaths with a 50% decrease
Swimming pool drownings for under 5 year olds, were down a massive 50 per cent according to new data from the Royal Life Saving in their reports. This is 6 drownings from 12 the previous year.
Australia wide, drowning deaths with children under 5, decreased by 52 per cent on 10-year average and a 37 per cent decrease on last year’s number which was 19.
Overall, swimming pool deaths recorded a 28 per cent decrease in drowning deaths compared to the 10-year average. The 28 drowning deaths were also a decrease of 11 per cent over the previous year which had 31 drowning deaths.
The evidence is that having a compliant pool fence barrier, saves lives. But we know there is still a lot more to do, we still see some pool fences that aren’t compliant and even some pools with out any pool fencing at all.
